Michael "Mitchell" Hammonds Obituary

Michael “Mitchell” Hammonds was born on August 03, 1955, to the late Rudolph and Daisy Hammonds. He departed this old world on June 30, 2024. His parents preceded him in death, including his son Andy Chavis, his brother Hudell “Moose” Hammonds, his sister Yvonne Hammonds, his grandson Joshua Lewis, and granddaughter Kari Jobe Jones.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Cora Faye Hammonds of the home. Seven children; Amy Smith (Don) of Hope Mills, Daisy McDougald (Shain) of Raeford, Natasha Pevia ( Anthony) of Red Springs, Michael Hammonds (Shekelly) of Pembroke, Franny Fisher (Tim) of Myrtle Beach, Joshua Barton of Pembroke, and Joyce Jones (Shane) of Red Springs.  His grandchildren Camry (Steven), Cassidy, Camille, Shain Jr, Ethan, Austin, CJ, Stefhen, Maverick, Justice, Briley, Katrina, Joseph, Jewels, and James. Two Great Grandsons Kayson and Wakizah. Three sisters; Darlene Hammonds and Phyllis Locklear of Shannon, Pearlene Hammonds of Pinehurst.  Six brothers; Wayne Hammonds (Wilma), James Hammonds, Rudolph Hammonds, Jerry Hammonds of Shannon. Delton Ray Hammonds of Raeford and Knox Hammonds (Betty) of Wagram. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. We would like to acknowledge some special nieces and nephews; Steven Ray, Kindrick, Patrick, Ronnie, Nicole, Christopher, and Michelle.

Mitchell was a lifelong carpenter and worked earnestly beside his two brothers. He exhausted himself day in and day out to provide for his family. His passion for Nascar began with the national anthem and ended at the finish line of every race as he cheered for a Ford. Ask him if he was ready to go fishing and he would beat you to the vehicle. We all knew that a bad day of fishing was better than a good day at work. The love for his brothers and sisters was immeasurable! Their bond is so special and unique. Let’s not forget if you ask him who his favorite child was he would just look up at us all with that sneaky grin and say, “Uuhhhh!” Not that we ever questioned his love for any of us; it was simply that we just did not want to share him. Even through his battle with lung cancer he thanked the Lord daily! All you had to do was look at him and say, “God is good”, he would reply, “all the time!” Two of his most earthly possessions were his wife and church. While having one of the hardest conversations we ever had to have with our father…he looked directly at us and said, “The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.” If we could leave one thing with you today it simply would be this; Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not into your own understanding. For his ways are not our ways, nor his thoughts our thoughts. The most important testimony out of all this that we can share with you is this, God honored our prayer request by signing a deed over to our father to his very own mansion in heaven.

We would like to thank everyone who lended a helping hand to our father through his battle. If you brought a cake, gave gas money, finished one of his many projects that he had started and was not able to complete, anyone who offered to take him to his treatments, or visited him. Maybe you were not able to physically be a support but if you fell on your knees, lifted him up in prayers, or interceded on his behalf; we truly thank you. Because of your kindness his journey was lighter. To Mr. Earl Rice, we pray that God blesses you on this side and the next for your generosity and kindness that you have shown to our Dad. To our aunts and uncles, there is nothing sweeter than a sibling's love for each other. You were all heaven sent and helped us win this fight.
