Mrs. Evelyn Carter Chavis, age 79, of Red Springs, North Carolina, was born on October 1, 1946, in Robeson County to the late Rev. Abner Chay Carter and Mrs. Gertrude Lowery Carter. She peacefully entered eternal rest and went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at her residence.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Herman Lewis “Bucky Boy” Chavis; her sister, Virginia Sue Carter; and her precious great-granddaughter, Reighynn Johannah “Sweet Posie” Chavis.
Mrs. Evelyn was a woman of God whose life reflected faith, love, and service. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and a cherished friend to many. She faithfully served as a Mother of the Church at Mercy’s Bridge Holiness Church, where her dedication and spiritual guidance touched countless lives. Her love for family and church was unwavering. She also found great joy in gardening and caring for her flowers, which reflected the beauty and peace she carried within her spirit. Mrs. Evelyn played basketball during her high school years and carried that love for the game throughout her life, proudly supporting the UNC Tar Heels.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory her two sons, Sherman Chavis and wife Cathy of Red Springs, North Carolina, and Rev. Ronald W. Chavis and wife Doris of Rowland, North Carolina; three brothers, Albert Ray Carter, Ray Carter, and Rev. Eddie Carter and wife Sherry; four sisters, Barbara Oxendine, Mary Angeline Locklear and husband Anthony, Susan “Vicky” Locklear, and Sandra Locklear and husband Mackie; three grandchildren, Rev. Ronald Brent Chavis and wife Savannah, Jonathan “John Boy” Chavis, and Kayla Danielle Chavis and husband Sandy; four great-grandchildren, Zaleigh Elizabeth Chavis, Nehemiah Wilson Chavis, Sammie Noah Chavis, and Hudson Jude Chavis; a special friend, Connie Cummings and husband David; a special sister-in-law, Annie “Aunt Bit” Hammonds; along with a host of loving family members and dear friends.
The family would like to express a special and heartfelt thank you to her devoted caregivers, Sandra Locklear and Tonya Locklear, for their loving care and compassion. The family also extends sincere gratitude to Scotland Hospice Care for their kindness, support, and exceptional care shown during her final days.
