David Oliver McCormick passed peacefully at his home on Parnell Road near Lumberton on Sunday January 18, 2026. He was 64.
He was preceded in death by his son, Adrian Demont McCormick, and his father, George McCormick.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years Rhonda McCormick; his daughter Danielle (Crystal) of Red Springs; stepdaughter Ashley Lester (Eric) of Pembroke and grandchildren; Adriana, Deshawn and Aniyah of Red Springs; his mother, Mrs.Clara McCormick of Red Springs; his sisters, Sandra and her husband Tony Helton of Charlotte, and Connie and her husband Cedric McDougald of Red Springs; and nieces Ciara Branch and Chelsea Helton, and nephews Cj McDougald and Christopher Helton.
David graduated Red Springs High School in 1979. He worked in the textile industry for several years and was a custodian at Peterson Elementary School in Red Springs for about 20 years before retiring in 2016. He also served as the animal control officer for the Red Springs Police Department. He once rescued a deer that became entangled in a fence and also removed an opossum from a local resident’s ceiling.
David was lovingly known as “Ghandi” or “The Ghan.” He was an avid sportsman, enjoying softball, drag racing, swimming, fishing and other competitive sports. He spent his Sunday afternoons watching NFL football with his family and enjoyed grilling before the Super Bowl games. He also enjoyed watching the NBA All Star games and the championship competitions in the summer.
David was a member of the tennis team at Red Springs High School. After high school days, his prized 1976 Z28 Camaro was one of the fastest street cars in Robeson County.
David was regarded as one of the greatest pool players in the region and among the top hunters as well. His rabbit dogs were among the top ranked competition dogs in hunting trials up and down the Eastern United States. He produced several field trial champions.
On hunting excursions, he regularly returned home with several rabbits that he cleaned and prepared for the family to eat. He also prepared other wild game like deer and racoon. And, his fishing trips up and down the Lumber River and some of his other favorite fishing spots often yielded catches of upwards of 100 freshwater fish. He would clean the fish and cook for the family’s summer fish fries.
David gave his life to the Lord and was dedicated Christian eagerly serving the less fortunate and sick in the community. He was active in the church until his illness about 10 years ago.
He will be dearly missed by his family and thousands of friends and acquaintances.
