He departed this life on February 28, 2023, at UNC Health Southeastern, Lumberton, North Carolina. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his son Gabriel Gaitlyn Fields.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife: Heather Locklear of the home, four sons: Damien Cole Fields, Gage Junior Fields both of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Trevor O'Ryan Locklear, Holden Kent Fields both of the home, one stepson: James Franklin Locklear Jr. of Lumberton, North Carolina, two brothers: Willie Cherokee Fields of Lumber Bridge, North Carolina, Jerry Dwayne Fields of Lumberton, North Carolina, two sisters: Nichola Ann Fields of Lumber Bridge, North Carolina, Sandra Ann Fields of Red Springs, North Carolina, grandmother, Edith Deese of Pembroke, North Carolina, a special niece: Yolanda Fields, a special uncle: Renferd Scott, nieces and nephews, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
