Mr. Merlin Sherrill Smith "Jim" was born on September 9, 1952, to his mother the late Mary Smith Wilson in Holland Town, Virginia. He departed this life on August 3, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family. Along with his mother he was preceded in death by a brother Larry Motts.

Mr. Merlin leaves to cherish his memories his wife of thirty years: Janice Chavis Smith of the home, one son: Cody Smith of the home, one stepson: David Chavis of Maxton, North Carolina, one daughter: Amy Smith of Baltimore, Maryland, a sister-in-law: Vicki Lloyd of Aberdeen, Maryland, one grandson: Joy Smith, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
